Ash Monday, Street Etiquette, Herculanean Haricut

What to call the Greek first day of Lent in English is something of a vexed question. The literal translation is "clean Monday", but that does sound rather odd. I just came across "Ash Monday", which seems better to convey what it is.
There is a bakery in narrow street where I live. There's only room for one car to pass between the vehicles on both sides, but there is a little side street next to the bakery into which it is possible to pull in out of flow of traffic. Recently I noticed that when someone popped in to by bread, he could even be bothered to take the two seconds it would have taken to pull over. So the cars behind had to wait while he chatted to the assistant.
Hercules (Iraklis) cut my hair today. We chatted in a sort of Greek-English mixture. He once had an English teacher girlfriend who subsequently went to China and is now writing a book.
